Temple Meads on a summer Saturday when most services were still loco-hauled. Frequent Regional Railways services between Cardiff and Portsmouth have to reverse and change engines, and have to compete for platform space with Inter-City HST services from Paddington, also loco-hauled services between the South-West and North-East. There are also local services and occasional other Regional Railways services. Some parcels traffic uses the parcels platform, while engines visit Bath Road depot for servicing or refuelling.

This simulation is set at Bristol Temple Meads, a principal interchange point between the Inter-City South-West to North-East services and the cross-country services from Swansea and Cardiff to Portsmouth and Brighton. There are also Inter-City services from London Paddington, some of which continue to Weston-Super-Mare, and further cross-country services to Weymouth, as well as local services to the Severn Beach line, Weston and Tauton. The station is seen on a Saturday in summer 1981, so there is no freight traffic and only two parcels trains are seen.
At the time of this simulation most Paddington services were operated by HST (Inter-City 125) units, but these had not yet taken over South-West to North-East services. The latter were covered by a variety of classes, including classes 45, 46, 47 and 50.
Most of the longer distance cross-country workings were loco-hauled and powered by classes 33 and 47, although occasional examples of classes 31 and 37 appeared; in many cases it is necessary to change engines at Bristol. On the shorter routes first generation ("Heritage") DMUs may be seen.
The station is seen on a Saturday in summer 1981. A number of relief passenger services operate only depending on the traffic available. You have to direct all the trains in and out, selecting platforms to avoid delays and minimise congestion. You will have to plan how to use the available platforms to avoid conflicts between arrivals and departures, and adjustments will be needed when arrivals are running late.
