Frequent Regional Railways services between Cardiff and Portsmouth compete for platform space with Inter-City services from Paddington, also between the South-West and North-East. There are also local services to Weston, Taunton and Gloucester, and occasional Regional Railways services to Southampton, Weymouth and Exeter. Substantial parcels traffic and occasional freight workings use the through lines and parcels platform, while engines and units visit Bath Road depot for servicing or refuelling.

This simulation is set at Bristol Temple Meads, a principle interchange point between the Inter-City South-West to North-East services and the Regional Railways services from Cardiff to Portsmouth and Brighton. There are also Inter-City services from London Paddington, some of which continue to Weston-Super-Mare or occasionally on to Devon or Cornwall, and further Regional Railways services to Southampton and Weymouth, as well as local services to the Severn Beach line, Gloucester, Weston and Taunton. Freight traffic is now rare, but there are departmental services serving the yards at Bristol East and Gloucester, as well as a small number of company trains.
At the time of this simulation all Paddington services were operated by HST (Inter-City 125) units, as were most South-West to North-East services. SOme of the latter, though, were covered by class 47s, usually the longer-range 47/8 variety, and usually with seven Mark 2 coaches.
Most of the longer distance Regional Railways workings are covered by the fleet of class 155 Super Sprinters based at Cardiff Canton. On the shorter routes first generation ("Heritage") DMUs may be seen, and an occasional class 150/2 Sprinter.
Freight workings are handled by a variety of diesel classes, depending on the sector responsible for each service.
The station is seen on a weekday in summer 1990. A number of freight and relief passenger services operate only on certain days, or depending on the traffic available. You have to direct all the trains in and out, selecting platforms to avoid delays and minimise congestion. You will have to plan how to use the available platforms to avoid conflicts between arrivals and departures, and adjustments will be needed when arrivals are running late.
