UK Silver Series - Exeter 1990 UK

At last, a replacement for Exeter 1987, but covering a much larger area. This has four track screens, and extends from St Thomas in the south to Cowley Bridge Junction in the north, and to Exmouth Junction in the east. It includes both St Davids and Central stations, and Riverside Yard, as well as the diesel stabling and fuelling point. There is extensive freight traffic based on Riverside Yard, with ballast workings to and from Meldon Quarry as well as Speedlink traffic and some company trains. There are trip workings to several private sidings in the Exeter area.
This simulation is set at Exeter on a weekday in the summer of 1990.
The main line to the north heads for Taunton, where the cross-country route to Bristol leaves the direct line to London Paddington. The former Southern Railway line to Crediton diverges to the west at Cowley Bridge Junction, just beyond Riverside Yard; at Crediton the Barnstaple branch leaves the former main line, now truncated at the ballast quarry at Meldon.
The main line continues to the south-west via Newton Abbot and Plymouth to Penzance. The Torbay line to Paignton diverges from the main line at Newton Abbot.
The former Southern Railway line to London Waterloo curves sharply uphill from St. David's station, passing through Central Station and St. James Park to Exmouth Junction, continuing via Honiton, Yeovil and Salisbury to Waterloo. The Exmouth branch leaves the main line at Exmouth Junction.
The Crediton and Exmouth lines are single track. The Honiton line is double track as far as Pinhoe, a mile beyond Exmouth Junction, and then largely single track to Salisbury.
As well as the main freight facilities at Riverside Yard, there are industrial sidings at Marsh Barton (E Pearse scrapyard - scrap metal), City Basin (Colas Roads - bitumen), Central station (Blue Circle - cement) and Exmouth Junction (Coal Concentration Depot).
Many through freights pause in Riverside Yard, or occasionally at St. Davids, for a crew change, and sometimes to add an assisting loco westbound or remove one eastbound. As this time Exeter was a focus for Speedlink wagonload traffic in the south-west, as well as handling heavy ballast traffic to and from Meldon Quarry.
You are responsible for all traffic in the area from Cowley Bridge Junction in the north to Exmouth Junction in the east and City Basin Junction in the south, a distance of about 2 miles in each direction. In this simulation most movements are at broadly the same speed.
You have to direct all the trains into, through and out of the area, selecting platforms and yard trucks to avoid delays and minimise congestion; you also have to manage the diesel depot, and ensure that locomotives are refuelled and that each train has suitable motive power.
This simulation is based on the scheduled service operating in the summer of 1990, with some conditional and extra passenger, empty stock and freight services appearing at higher difficulty levels. For added realism, some arriving trains will be late, and locomotives will occasionally need attention before further use. Some simplification of the track plan has been necessary, particularly of the freight yard. The locomotives and units that will be present are those which belonged to the relevant sectors at this time, and of classes that were observed on similar workings.
