This simulation covers the former Highland Railway main line from Inverness to Perth (in Scotland). You are in control for part of a summer Sunday. The stretch of line simulated covers a length of approximately 110 miles.
After a quiet period during the fifties and sixties, prospects for the line revived in the seventies as oil brought the promise of new traffic. The stretch from Dalwhinnie to Blair Atholl was singled in
1966 to reduce costs, but the double track was restored in 1978 in the face of increased traffic, and the future of the line now seems secure.
The traffic to be handled is based on the timetable for summer 1984. Some delays to traffic can be expected. In addition to the late running of individual trains, there may be patterns of delay
due to engineering work and other operational factors. You will be given a report on any operational problems at the start of the simulation, and then an update every six hours. You may also have
to contend with speed restrictions due to engineering work, causing delays of around five minutes.
