This simulation is set at Lime Street Station in Liverpool. Lime Street is a terminus of the former LMS, previously LNWR, main line from Crewe and London Euston, which also carries traffic from the south and south-west via Birmingham; other routes go to St. Helens and Wigan, for Preston and the north, and to Warrington, Manchester and the east. A connection off the Crewe route also gives access to Chester and the North Wales coast, though the regular local services to Chester and Ellesmere Port actually take a longer route via Warrington Bank Quay.
The station is seen in the summer of 1998; you have a choice of weekday or Saturday schedules. There are no conditional or extra trains, though there are some differences between the Saturday and weekday schedules, and one slight variation on Friday. For added realism, some arriving trains will be late.
You are responsible for all traffic for the last half mile or so into the terminus. In this simulation all movements are at broadly the same speed, slowing to walking pace close to the platforms. You have to direct all the trains in and out, selecting platforms to avoid delays and minimise congestion; you also have to change loco on each loco-hauled service. You will have to plan how to use the available platforms to avoid conflicts between arrivals and departures, and adjustments may be needed when arrivals are running late.
Nowadays most empty stock is stabled in sidings at Edge Hill, though there is a maintenance depot at Allerton, as well as more comprehensive maintenance facilities at Newton Heath and Longsight in Manchester.
The locomotives and units that will be present are those which were in use by the relevant Train Operating Companies (TOCs) at this time, and of classes that were observed on similar workings.
