UK Peterborough 1988 UK

On the busy East Coast main line, on a weekday in late summer, with lots of HST traffic to Leeds, Newcastle and Scotland. With the wires energised to Leeds, class 91 Electras are on test, and the solitary class 89 is also to be seen. Substantial freight traffic and regular cross-country services, some using the main line to Grantham, complicate your task.
This simulation is set at Peterborough on the East Coast Main Line between London (Kings Cross) and the north. As well as catering for mail line services, Peterborough is a key point on the Provincial Sector services between East Anglia and the Midlands and North-West; at the time of this simulation services for Liverpool, Blackpool and Manchester travelled via the main line to Grantham, continuing through Nottingham and Sheffield; this service is supplemented by occasional local services to Cambridge. The station also handles local services to Spalding, some continuing to Lincoln and occasionally to Doncaster or Sheffield; and there is an hourly electric outer suburban service to London. Much freight traffic uses the line to March and Whitemore Yard; in the opposite direction many freight services terminate or pause in the West Yard at Peterborough, which is part of the former New England yard. At this time fly-ash traffic from power stations in the Midlands was being wound down, but several trains will still be making the journey to Fletton or Little Barford.
At the time of this simulation main line electrification had been completed through to Leeds, but the class 91 locomotives were still undergoing extensive testing, and only the solitary class 89 may occasionally be seen on passenger work. None of the Mark 4 Driving Van Trailers (DVTs) had been delivered for use in push-pull operation, and test running utilised a number of adapted class 43 HST power cars. Main line passenger services were almost exclusively operated by HST sets.
The Provincial Sector services were handled mainly by Super Sprinters of class 156 based at Norwich, with occasional substitution by first generation DMUs or older Sprinters of class 150. Local services to Spalding and Cambridge were operated by a variety of first generation DMUs, as was a parcels service to York.
Freight workings are handled by a variety of diesel classes, depending on the sector responsible for each service.
The station is seen on a weekday in early autumn 1988. A number of freight services operate only on certain days, or depending on the traffic available, and the class 91 test services operate as required according to a number of possible diagrams. You have to direct all the trains in and out, selecting platforms to avoid delays and minimise congestion. You will have to plan how to use the available platforms to avoid conflicts between arrivals and departures, and adjustments will be needed when arrivals are running late.
